What is dayparting in digital signage?

If your screen needs to show something different at breakfast than it does at dinner, you need dayparting, and it’s less exotic than the name suggests. Here’s the definition, how it relates to ordinary scheduling, and how CloudyFy TV builds it.

Dayparting
Dayparting is scheduling different content for different times of day on the same screen, such as a breakfast menu that switches to lunch at 11 a.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. It lets one screen do the work of several, without anyone manually swapping content on site.

Dayparting vs scheduling

  • DaypartingvsScheduling

Dayparting is often marketed as if it were a separate feature, but it’s really one pattern built on top of ordinary scheduling: a repeating rule that only applies inside a time window. Scheduling is the umbrella, covering a one-off change, a repeating rule, or an override; dayparting is what you get when a repeating schedule is scoped to a specific time-of-day window instead of running all day. A platform that can schedule content at all can usually do dayparting too. The real question is how it handles two dayparted rules overlapping, or an urgent override interrupting one, which is where scheduling engines actually differ.

How does dayparting work in CloudyFy TV?

CloudyFy TV schedules come in three types: Once, Repeat and Override, each with a per-row timezone. Dayparting is a Repeat schedule scoped to a time window, say 6 to 11 a.m., so a menu board can carry breakfast, lunch and dinner layouts back to back, each on its own recurring window. An Override schedule can interrupt any of them for a one-off promotion without touching the underlying dayparted plan, and CloudyFy TV’s precedence rules (Override beats Repeat beats Once) decide which one wins if two ever overlap.
